4 cyl 4000 - Starter - Does it need a spacer

I'm replacing the starter on my 1964 4000, 4cyl gas and it sure looks like there should be some kind of spacer. There is about 1/8" between the face of the starter and the tractor.

Unfortunately, I'm working on it after someone else has so I cannot compare with "what it was".

As I think about it I think there was a spacer ring in the past. If you look at the picture included you see the gap.

There is something wrong there, other than a missing spacer. I have both a 4000 gasoline and a 4000 diesel. Neither of them requires a spacer nor do either of them have one.

New Holland parts does not show a spacer either. click here:5 speed double clutch transmission case

My guess is that your starter is not the correct one.

I should also add that the hot post on your starter indicates that it's an incorrect part.

The hot should be maybe 45 degrees higher on the starter than the one in your picture.

I got the starter from this site (Yesterday's Tractors)

Did you make certain it was for a 4 cylinder 4000? Might it be for a 3 cylinder model?

The two small screws and offset strap indicate that starter would have a relay mounted to it, I've seen starters like that but not on a Ford tractor.
The one you have doesn't look right
If you got it from here contact them about returning it for the correct one.

Starter on my 881 mounts with no spacer

I wouldn't feel comfortable using that starter, my 871 uses the one as pictured by destroked and your 4 cyl. 4000 should use the same one. Even if you spaced it correctly with washers or something, who knows if the bendix will engage correctly? Exchange it.

Maybe your bolts are too long and are bottoming out in the holes before the flange on the end of the starter can be pulled tight against the bell housing???

Looks more like an 8N starter with the solenoid mounting screws
