Ford 4000 Hydraulic Leak

I feel completely out of my element here. I know NOTHING about tractors or engines. But I'm willing to learn. We've just moved onto some acreage and I bought myself a Ford 4000 with a loader. It's been good for the 2 months I've had it now. But what is this? I think it's part of the hydraulic system. It has a leak that just showed up today that you can see in the closeup.

Is this something a novice tractor owner like me can fix? I'd love to be able to do this stuff myself.

I'm not sure why the pictures are showing up sideways here so my apologies.

That's just a cover (plug) leaking. Pull the snap ring and replace the o-ring underneath. You need a -144 o-ring (90 durometer) that you can source from a local hydraulic store for less that $1.00 or you can buy from FNH for $10-15.00. Here's a link to the Messicks parts page for a 4610 Ford. It will open on the main parts page. Go to Section (07) Hydraulic Systems, Page (10A02) and look at part number 46.

If you submit the info on your data plate under your hood, someone here will verify your year of build and model number. Then you can look up parts on Messicks.com and see how things go together. What you're endeavoring to do is pretty easy and there's no reason you can't figure it out. Welcome to the forum.

Interesting tractor.
A Select O Speed means it's a 1965-75
model - tin says it's a post 1968 but it
has a 1976 and newer hydraulic pump on
it.
Post a photo of the rear end so we can
see if it is in fact a 4000 (would be an
SU model if it is) or a 3000.
Welcome to the Ford Board.

I was wondering about that, too. Fairly new paint, but no paint on the pump. But if you have to replace the pump, why not go newer and get the spin-on filter? I don't know about all years, but the years that I have sales literature for show the 4000SU as only available with the 8-speed.

I asked about that a few years ago.
Re: installing an 8.8 gpm gear pump in place of the original 4.4 gpm piston pump.
Didn't get much for answers so still don't know what issues it might cause.

Here's some pics. I'd love to know more about it for sure!

I took a look and wasn't sure where that data plate was but here are a couple numbers I found. I have no idea if they mean anything. I'd love to know more about the tractor if you can tell me anything.

It has the big rear axle bolt pattern like my 4000SU so it probably is.
Those numbers don't id the tractor but the 3A5 below the casting number indicates the block was cast on Jan 5 1973.
the data tag is under the hood above the battery but most times they get painted over during a repaint.
There's 3 rolls of numbers located on the flat area of the clutch housing directly behind the starter that allow identify the tractor.

Here's a photo of my 4000SU

A picture of the rear axle will tell us
if its a 4000 or not.
The data plate, if it's still there, is a
foil tag under the hood. The serial
number, unit number (date code), and
model number will also be stamped (not
raised numbers) on the transmission
housing opposite of the hydraulic pump.
The serial number will start with an A,
B, or C. The model number will start with
a 3 or C for a 3000, and a 4 or D for a
4000.

I appreciate it everyone! I just found the O-ring and am trying to find the right replacement for it. Thanks for your input!

I also appreciate learning more about this tractor (and tractors in general). In a weird sort of way I kinda like when I have to work on it...it helps me learn.

Thanks again!

Mine has a similar pump to power the loader. I'm trying to sell the tractor and the hydraulics have completely stopped working. I think it might be the feed to the pump that is blocked as there's nothing coming out of it but will need to drain down the whole system to find out. Wish my various leaks were as small as that one!

If you look under the hood/bonnet, above the battery, there is a black and silver data plate. If you can read the numbers of this it will tell you what exact date the tractor was built on. Your engine looks remarkably clean - someone's spent time on it

When your livelihood doesn't depend on a running tractor, it's a good way to relieve stress and maintain sanity.
