Serial numbers

Hello. I have a 600 series tractor that has on lower right side of engine EAE6015J what does this mean other than 134 ci. And a serial number of 144278 and 640 above that.I assume I have a 1957 640 Tractor if i'm correct.PTO does not run unless engaged and clutch engaged. So is this a live PTO? Thank you.

EAE6015J is the engine block casting code, EAE was 134 cu in and EAF
was 172 cu in during that time period. 6015 is the Ford code for an
engine block and J (I believe) is the engineering revision.

Serial number 144278 is a 1957, and 640 is the model number which is
a 600-series tractor with 4-speed manual transmission.

The 640 doesn't have live PTO, and operates as you describe. In
fact the four-speed never had a live PTO variant, that required a 5-
speed, specifically model 660 (650 was 5-speed without live PTO).
The live PTO model had a two-stage clutch. Press down a little on
the clutch and the forward motion of the tactor stops, press down
all the way and both forward motion **and** PTO rotation stops.
