Need some help with elec issues on a 8n
I picked up not running I bought new
battery for it and did get things to it
but get some different results with test
light than info I found on YouTube.

Give us more info.
6 or 12 volt?
Side or front mount distributor?
You state you are getting different results from what you see on youtube.
What results are you getting and where are you testing?
There is a very good N specific board here so I would ask there. Be prepared to give better, more specific info tho.
nnalert the N Board

It's a side dist. And the key switch wires were old and frayed and its 6volt I have a test light and with key off the light comes on touching the coil and when turn on the key its goes dimmer and when crank no spark the cap and rotor and plugs are all new

here is test lamp clip connected? is tractor still battery positive post to chassis?

yes still positive to grnd. and one end of test light to neg, on battery i think i tried it both ways
also have a spark tester installed on one of the plugs.

k, you said light goes dimmer when you turn key on. That is to be expected with those light connections. Does it blink when you try cranking it while key is on?

If lamp probe is on side of coil connected to distributor when doing above, then I suspect points are stuck closed, the stud feed-thru on side of distributor is cracked/broken and shorted to case or the condenser is shorted.

also need to mention i do not see a balast resistor. on tractor and also with key off test lights one
side of key term. and when switch on it does not light up either side

ll still makes sense and side distributor Ns did not have ballast resistor.
