Transmission Rear Support Plate Removal

I am in the process of trying to re assemble the 4th, low, and 8th shift Fork in my Ford 4000 transmission. I figured a rear split would allow me access to slide the rails out and re assemble the fork and arm. I have completed the rear split - but I have hit a roadblock in trying to remove the transmission rear support plate. I was able to pry it away about a half inch but I will not go further (see picture). Upon re reading my shop manual, is seems transmission removal may be necessary and I will need to split it between the engine and bell housing. Is this correct? Or am I overlooking a step in removing the rear support plate that does not require trans removal?
