Getting my 8N ready for sale. Broken plug needs extraction

I thought the day would never come, but I'm going to sell my '52 8n. I bought an 841 several months ago and just don't need two tractors. The 8N has sat for quite a while. I tried to start it a few days ago. It turned over really strong but would not fire off. Today, I shot some stater fluid into the carb's air intake and, after a while, it fired up. But it sounded like it was running on three cylinders. I found the number one plug and PART of the spark plug sitting on top of the engine.

Anyone ever extract a broken spark plug out of an 8N? Do I need to pull the hood (and gas tank?) I hate to have to do that. I've got it soaking in penetrating oil, as well as the other three plugs. I hope they come out easier. Any tips are appreciated.

How much is left in the head? not enough to get a hold of? If it's just the threaded end you may be able to use an easy out = bolt extractor. How did it brake off?

Look like all the porcelain came out clean.

Not sure how it broke. A few days ago when I was trying to get it started, I twisted the plug wires to see if that would help get a spark. Just a hand twist. It might have broken then, and popped out when it fired up today.

here does your tractor live? Must be some kind of nasty climate?0

JMOR, the tractor lives in very humid SE Texas near Houston but for the almost 13 years I ve owned it, it s always been housed in a shed.

The plug appears to have rusted off not broken. It appears that you will need to use an extractor, and that you can save a whole lot of time and aggravation by removing the hood-tank. If you are not familiar with extracters they have a tapered square cross section with a cutting edge on each corner. You can put a lot more force on them than you can an easy out.

I am with showcrop I would remove the hood and tank after you get the remaining part out I would rotate that piston to top dead center and use a magnet to remove any metal that might drop down inside the cylinder

Wow!

It has been a long time since those plugs have been out.

You MAY be able to remove it with an extractor.

In any event, R & Ring the cylinder head to remove, etc. is straight forward.

After a second plug popped out (good compression?) during attempted start up the next day, I decided I'm going to take it in to the shop and let them deal with it. Wouldn't be surprised if the remaining two broke off during removal. They may have to remove the head to get everything out. I'll just let them do the tune up while it's there.

Getting it onto the trailer is going to be fun. What's the best method of loading a dead tractor onto a trailer? Use a "come-along?" Or, I can use my 841 to pull it up on the trailer, though, with it hooked up to the truck, I'd have to pull at an angle, next to the truck.

Thought on this?

I did this twice with my Ford 100 HP cab tractor onto my goose neck trailer. A friend came with an excavator and set up near the front and pulled me up and just swiveled around. In your case I would tow it straight ahead up your trailer. Just jackknife your truck and trailer so that you can get the second truck or tractor at the front of your trailer, and have a straight shot with your chain.
