I posted back in the fall and used John T. Troubleshooting's check list. I am at the part where the test light does not go off as the engine is cranked slowly, matter of fact it is on all the time when the key is on. The points are new and gapped correctly. It passed the coil tests and I have 6V to the coil. It is still a 6V system (not a 12V conversion). It has always been reliable.

The test light should be on post going to side of distributor and not on post coming from switch. If it does not go out at all then something in the distributor is grounding the wire from coil. Prime suspects would be something shorted in the feed through on side of distributor or something grounding the points.

We are on the same page, measuring from the post on the distributor. The short through the side of the distributor, what would I be looking for? Shouldn't there some sort of an insulator between the stud and the distributor housing?

Ok, let's try that again. Take a look at parts 12233 and 12234. You're grounded to the distributor body if these ain't any good.

Thanks for the exploded parts diagram (worth at least 1000 words). I can't make out what 12234 is.

(quoted from post at 13:47:07 03/24/19) 12234 in an insulator.

Yeah, and if 12233 bushing is broke, you can still end up with a short, or at the very least, wet inside of the distributor.

Thanks, I found an insulator kit in a catalog. I will be ordering it just in case. Thanks for the help.

I have my insulator kit and looking at the exploded drawing of the distributor would it be better to pull the distributor and work on it at a bench? I am a little hesitant to pull the distributor. Does anyone have advice one way or the other?
