Made a special trip to get a solenoid for a Ford 621, 12 volt, gas engine. The old solenoid was sticking. It was the one that the ignition switch must be on to activate the starter and a working safety starter button.
To make the story short the new ST81 will not work. I have the battery cable going to the right side, a live wire coming from the terminal block when the switch is on to the ignition terminal on the solenoid and a wire going from the starter terminal on the solenoid to the starter button. I have good grounds on the solenoid and the starter button.
I disassembled the old solenoid and cleaned up the disk and now it works great. I doubt that Napa will take it back because I had it on the tractor. I really would to replace the old solenoid. I am beginning to doubt Napa's quality parts.

If you are using the starter button on the trans mission you have the wrong solenoid. The st81 is an internal ground unit the I terminal is a resister bypass terminal the s terminal need 12v to make it work. The ford solenoid is a external ground unit the starter ground the s terminal They sell one on this site.

I think this is what you are looking for, I have used this setup on 8N's to make them so they won't crank unless the keyed ignition switch is "ON".

It's a "Standard Ignition" (SMP) part number, but any auto parts store should be able to cross that SMP number to the brand they carry.

Thank-you, JMOR, Bob and sunbeam. Yes, I had another senior-citizen moment when looking in my Napa catalog. The right part # is ST542.
The tractor is up and running now.
