445c Muffler, OEM vs aftermarket?

My 1989 445C came with a generic small diameter round muffler. Inside looks like straight through with baffles around the sides. It's loud, I wear earplugs plus muffs to protect my old ears that are beat up from 40 years of mining equipment noise. Are the OEM spec oval mufflers for the 1980 -1990's 3 cylinder Fords quieter? Most of my hours are doing loader and Gannon scraper work at 1000 to 1700 RPM.
Thanks, Guy.

YES the oval ones are quieter, but that quiet comes with a cost, my 345C also has the little round one, soon to be changed to the oval too!

I have the Stanley round mufflers on my tractors purchased at TSC, the small oval economy mufflers aren't any quieter and have to much back pressure, I've blown a couple off when working the tractor hard.
The tall oval mufflers for later models are a little quieter but not enough the justify the cost.
These engines are noisy, you can quieten the exhaust as much as you want but that's not going to do anything the help dampen the engine noise.

Short barrel oval and long barrel oval mufflers with a turnout exhaust pipe are both available in the aftermarket. Either will be quieter than what you have. How you value the quieter exhaust is your decision. As others say, these engines are inherently loud.

Thanks for info. I understand that a significant amount of noise is coming from those three large cylinders firing. With no sound isolation between the engine block and the trans, much of that noise is emitted by the operators area. I've noticed that 445D models have a sheet metal cover over the top and sides of the transmission to reduce sound emissions. I can borrow a professional noise dosimeter from work and will measure the noise level with each muffler.

One thing I have noticed on most of the older style mufflers is the pipe ended about level with the top of my head when i was setting in the seat, adding a extension pipe with a turn out angled away from me helped redirect the sound and get it above my head.
Down side is it makes the pipe and muffler easier to get snagged by low tree limbs an low building door ways.
