Ford 600 engine noise

I had a 600 series tractor with an engine noise somewhat like a wrist pin or something like that. Quiet at idle but audible at higher rpm. I sold it to a
friend and informed him of the noise. He thought governor and replaced it. No change. He put new piston, rings, and wrist pins. He said crank and rod
brgs fine. Good oil pressure. No change. He talked to a long time ford mechanic and was told timing gears worn. Does this sound right? If so, this does
not sound like a terrible job. Am I correct?

If you have a remote valve on it you can hold it in position and it will load the gears and the noise should stop. You can also put an implement on the back and the noise should stop while it's lifting. I have one that rattles like crazy, I can't believe it is still chugging along. It could be the cam holding plate, I have seen them broken before.

I will try putting an implement on it and lifting it. had forgotten that the hyd pump is pulled by the back of the cam shaft. Thx

Once it's lifted, as soon as you set it down it will start making the noise again if it's in the cam gearing. You can install the cam gear inframe but that way poses it's on problems. You have to get it in the keyway and hammer it on which won't be easy to get to. If you don't have the hood back on yet you can remove the right side radius rod caps, the spindle steer arm and the front engine mount nuts and swing the whole front end out of the way to give you easy access. You also have to turn the crank (installing a new crank gear will need a frontend swingaway, I think) little by little as the gear goes on to mesh the gears. You could probably use the center cam bolt to help pull it on while you tap it with a properly sized socket. Make sure you don't break the bolt. You can put the gear in an oven to make it expand and go on easier. You can give a shout out to TinCan, just put his name in the message header, he just recently installed a cam in his engine. If everything else was already done I would change both crank and cam gears.

I forgot you will need a longer bolt than the cam bolt to help pull the cam gear on, and maybe a nut and washers. It could be a bad hydraulic pump gear or pump gear driveshaft making the noise. You can hold a tire tool or stick up to where the noise is coming from and put your ear to it to pinpoint the noise.

Did you put something on the lift? You need the pump on to check for the noise in the front gears. By loading the gears it takes all backlash out and the noise will mostly go away until it quits lifting. Then the noise will get louder again.
