Steering column rebuild time.

So I finally got around to rebuilding the 641's steering box and I think I have found the source of some of the looseness. This box used to have the aftermarket Charr-Lynn power steering unit on it. The pump and lines have been removed leaving the cobbled up shaft and brackets the unit used. I was told by the PO that the steering box can be used as is and will work fine if adjusted correctly and all wear parts are in good shape. I think the shaft is in need of attention though, so I've decided to weld the upper portion of the shafts together eliminating the need for a retaining clip, hopefully that will take out some of the slop. It's gonna need all new bearings, bushings and seals and hopefully that takes care of the remaining slop. Has anyone on here had any dealings with this kind of unit and if so how did they adjust out? I think it steers easy enough it's just loose and slow to react to the wheel. Any thoughts or pointers on this? Thanks Dan

If you want tight steering, you have to have no end play in your input shaft bearing (shim adjusted), and no backlash between the gears (screw adjusted). You also need to have good ball joints.
