Select o Speed

Not yet! But I'm sure I will be once I open mine up. It's the only thing I have not opened yet, and I've had to fix everything else I've opened to look at! LOL J/K

Pat,
in Deer Lodge.

The reverse seems to start out slow then picks up kind of
sudden. Also I can?t get pto to shut off. It?s the independent
pto. Other gears seem to work fine.

PTO will never shut off on those things unless you have a complete solar eclipse happening at around the same time. Stated another way, the PTO should stop if you have a load hooked up to it, but it may very well revolve slowly if nothing is hooked up to it.

If you have problems with delayed engagement, I'd say some pressure testing is in order. Does it get worse when it warms up?

No. Doesn?t get worse after warm up. I notice line goes into plate on top of area where gear shifters would be. Is there a cable or something that runs in there? Don?t really use pto at all. Mainly use the loader. It?s a 4400 industrial.

Should be two conduits going into the top of the transmission cover. One cable shifts the transmission, the other engages/disengages the PTO. If you see anything else, reply back with a pic.

Both reverses? Do 9th and 10th do this too?

As Bern states, PTO spinning with no load attached is normal.

There should also be a pair of wires for the starter safety switch.

Interstate Tractor 25E south of I-81 in White Pine is pretty good. Ask at the NAPA downtown, they might know who the mechanics were at Bob Bales Ford tractor shop.

(quoted from post at 08:00:00 03/05/19) There was but it is disconnected and bypassed.

First thing I'd do is get the safety starter switch back in the loop. That's the most dangerous thing one can have!

Secondly, have you tried to load the PTO? If not, I'm still saying this is very normal and not to worry about.

Then thirdly, to have one of your reverses acting abnormally (you don't say which one) and no other ratios in that transmission malfunctioning, is not possible! Each component, clutch or band, in that transmission comes into play in a minimum of four ratios. If one component is failing, it will be noticeable in at least four of your selector positions.

Believe I'd just use the tractor, once I got the safety switch back in the loop, and not worry about the rest unless and until something either locks up or goes to neutral entirely.

There are two conduits running into transmission cover. Also a set of wires that must be for the safety switch. They are disconnected and safety bypassed.

Thanks for info. I'll try to get safety switch hooked back up and keep fooling around with it. I bought it mostly for loader and it does good enough to get by. Thanks
