Cranks but no start

I just got my very first tractor a Ford 841-D. It?s been sitting for 3 years. I drained all the old fuel from tank, lines and filter. When I crank it, it squirts from injectors. I tried squirting starting fluid in glow plug hole but no luck. Can anybody lend me some advice? Oh and it?s 23 outside.

Thank you

Welcome to the forum!

Does the starter whirl it over well? Slow cranking will make it a bear to start. Can you tow start it? Maybe a wee wiff of starting fluid in the breather as you tow it.

Skyboybob, as you know you need fuel under adequate pressure to mist, as well as adequate compression in the cylinder to ignite the fuel. Not having it running makes it difficult to check either. Your Ford diesel has no glow plugs, those are intake manifold heaters. You can see if they work by just holding your hand on the outside of one to see if it warms up. My 971-D starts quickly down to 20 or so without the preheaters, but it has only 4-5 hundred hours on a rebuild and a just a few hours on an injection pump rebuild. Once you get it running you can get a handle on how well the injection pump is working, as well as the cylinder compression. In order to get it started the first time I would give it a sniff of ether. Don't use the pre-heaters though.
