2000 thermostat elbow

Any tricks to stopping a leak here? Finally putting it back together. When the thermostat opens up I get a leak. I have torqued on the bolts a good bit. Wondering just how hard to push it. New gasket. I didn?t put any sealer on it. Should I add some and let it set up a few days before warming it up?

On the '65-up tractors, it's pretty easy to have the thermostat drop down and get pinched when you bolt the housing on. If that happens, you certainly don't want to tighten the bolts even more.

Did you get your thermostat seated correctly? At least in the early 4 cylinder 2000 there is machined circle that fits the thermostat exactly. (Which 2000 are we talking about here?)

If you didn't use any sealer it'd be extremely easy to drop the thermostat out of that circle and pinch it between the head and the elbow, causing the elbow not to seat properly.

Funny you bring that up. That happened the first time I put it together. It wasn?t so much a leak as it was gusher then. Took it apart and got it to stick in the elbow good this time. Inspected before tightening down and it should be good. It is maybe a heavy weep now.

Fwiw,
A 72 2000 could also be either gas or diesel.
The Tstat housings between the two are different as well. Diesel bolts on the head. Gas on the wet intake manifold.
I think one is cast iron and the other AL.
Tstat is one of the few places I will use a bit of pucky. Holds the thing into the housing before you bolt it on.

Take the tstat housing and lap it a little on some fine sandpaper backed by flat glass then use some non hardening permatex gasket sealer on the gasket.
