need to extend screen in fuel tank ???

Hi all: recently purchased an aftermarket fuel tank and upon installing a new fuel shut off valve assy from YT noticed that the screen attached to the shut off valve assy does not enter into the new fuel tank very far. My concern in this regard is that after a while given normal use that the finely meshed screen in the tank will become somewhat restricted(starved fuel); and the only way to clean it would be to remove the shut off valve again, etc. My initial thoughts were to double up the vertical length of screen somehow to allow more fuel at any given time should debri become a restriction problem ? Have any of you folks run into this problem: i.e. aftermarket tanks and how to correct /modify or add another filter in the tank that will increase the surface area of
screen filtering IN the tank ?? "64 Ford ,2000 with 172 engine...all thoughts are appreciated, as always

oesn't seem to have been a problem for the first 60 years.

I agree with JMOR. In addition, making the screen taller would effectively reduce the volume of your tank if
it's a diesel, as it would start to suck air and cause your engine to quit running.

Thanks all for the comments.... perhaps I haven't explained my concerns in enough detail ?? The newer aftermarket tank is thicker where the fuel shut off valve goes .... the original tank was thinner thereby allowing the shut off valves vertical screen to project further into the tank !! The screen on the shut off valve is apprx. 2 1/2 " long. When assembled in the bottom of the tank in the new tank only 1" is above the inside of the tank vs. 2 3/8" when the old tank was in use ! I realize that clean fuel is a must (non ethanol too), as well as maintenance but over time if fuel isn't used the fuel becomes varnished and sludge ridden no matter what you do .... this breakdown eventually causes the matter to flow to the screen and hence restricts the flow downward to the carb, etc. It seems to me that if I can increase the vertical screening that over time this will aid in keeping the screen filtering more fuel for longer periods of time before I eventually have to clean the shut off valve screen by removing the valve... At this point I wonder if the carb will receive enough fuel with only the 1" projection in the tank AND maybe I am toooo concerned about this ????

Jim, if your normal use includes a lot of trash in the tank you could always just siphon a gallon or so of gas out annually and pull a lot of the trash with it.

I have come to the conclusion that as long as the screens smaller surface area and the small hole in the top of the shut off valve under the screen are adequate enough to supply enough fuel to the carb when running under loads that periodical inspection along with clean gas and maintenance of the tanks innards is the ticket ! Thanks all for your comments
