How to identify Ford's tractor diesel engines?

Hey guys, I've got two basket case diesel engines and would like to order a service manual. How and where should I look for identifying numbers?

Both are 3.90 bore with sleeves, one has some sort of counter balance on the middle main bearing cap that is gear driven off the crank The other does not have this balancer.

Thanks

Tom

A 3.90" bore diesel would be a 172 engine. You'd want to get the manual for the 600-900 series tractors made
in the 1950s. That would cover your engine. The manual I have here says "SE 8175" on it.

The first introduced 172 diesels were not equipped with balancers, so it appears you have a very early diesel engine. We at the dealership put some heavy gasket material between the transmission and the steering gear to help reduce the vibration, but as I remember, it didn't help much.
