640 PTO jumps out of gear.

The 640 PTO jumps out of gear. While cleaning out the hydraulic section I took the PTO shifter rail apart.

Looks a little worn so I turned the rail over and stretched the detent spring a 1/8 inch more. It was a tough little spring.

Put it back together and it seems as if it is now harder to engage and disengage the PTO. Maybe this will fix the problem.

check for end play of the PTO shaft - if it is excessive it will cause the PTO to jump out. It is controlled by the retaining collar near the bearing.

Ditto what Pomester said. make sure there is no thrust play.. that will walk them out of engagement, and mushroom the end, and
chew the splines

I guess this is the retaining collar I have marked with the arrow. I will look at the internal end of the PTO shaft tomorrow, but I did not notice any wear when I took it out.

The other end shows some wear but I believe it is from the over run coupler. I will check the end play when I put the shaft back in as I am waiting on parts from YT. I think Washington / Idaho had some bad weather which is delaying my parts.

the bearing should be tight between the collars - I can see ~3/8" where the shaft is free to slide thru the bearing - I use heat to expand the collar so it adjusts easily -

at this point, make a critical evaluation of the bearing and collar condition - neither are particularly expensive and it would be easy to replace both plus the seal now -
