We've had a lot of rain lately but I finally got around to measuring and takin pics of the different shifters on our tractors.

The measurements are from the shift top to the bottom of the knob.

It's apparent the early models have shorter shifters.
With the 4000SU and 4600AP shifters being the same I'd say a 4000AP's would also be the same.
Interesting that I never noticed the 4200 and 4500 main shifters being the same length and size until now.
It also appears that industrial models have longer main sticks to make shifting easier.
Also note that 5 had the same 10 3/4" range shifter.

Destroked,
This is the kind of info only a Ford
tractor nut would be interested in.
I see you have one of the old cast iron
shift covers on the 4500. Always kinda
liked those. Don't know if they are better
or worse. Just think they're neat.
This project 4000 has one. First one I've
ever had.
I thought your 4200 cover would have had
the longer, aluminum shift knobs on it.
Were those only used on the 52/7200s?
Now that I think about it, Ken's 545 has
longer shifter handles.
I do think you need longer ones on the RCs
cause you sit up higher.
I suspect I'll have to do something to
extend mine.
Thanks for the effort/photos you put into
this.
I guess I AM a tractor nut cause I liked
it.

I echo Ultradog?s thanks. Very unique info, very clear &
concise & complete, all in the best spirit of what makes this
board so special and valuable.

UD the 4200 shifters did have the longer aluminum shift knobs but my brother took them to use on his 5200, his were missing when he traded for the tractor.

Bern I have read about the change in the shifter lengths and could tell the difference when setting on the tractors, just thought I'll include some photos for a better visual effect.
I had forgot about the softer detent springs, wonder how much easier it would make changing gears with the short handles using the softer detent springs.
I know it takes more effort the change gears on the older 5000 than the 4000SU even with the slightly longer handle.

Sometime if you are at your brothers maybe
you could snap a couple of photos of those
aluminum handles. Also get some rough
dimensions if you could.
A friend of mine has a lathe I can use and
I might just make a pair of them.
Thanks

Thanks for this.
I'd heard, not read here I dont think as I don't remember the topic coming up before,
that the older tractors had too short of handles and were hard to shift.
Might have equated that with the CI cover from shifting one at a dealer's once.
Never thought about softening the detents. Never realized there were so many sizes either.
