Any suggestions on getting the best set of manual for this tractor? I would like to have a original owner manual if possible or a very nice copy. Does anyone know a number of good ref to the correct Battery that will fit in there? I have a truck lined up to pick it up this weekend.

Ford made a single Operator's Manual (Owner's Manual) for the 2000/3000/4000 series tractors. The 4000SU is included.
They also made a single Service Manual for the 2000/3000/4000/5000/7000 series tractors. You can get one as a scanned PDF on CD for around $10.00 on ebay. If you want a full paper version then it is a bit more money. The I&T FO-41 after market Service Manual covers the 2000/3000/4000 series (4000SU included) and you can get one from many places on the internet for under $30.00. I have both the Ford Service Manaul on CD and the I&T FO-41 for my 4000.

The correct battery is a 4DLT, big, heavy and pricy.
I install a longer ground cable in switch to a Group 49 battery, has a little more cranking amps, smaller, lighter, cost a little less and has a much longer warranty.

Yes, the correct battery is a 4DLT, IF your tractor is a diesel!
Gasoline engines use a smaller battery.

Sorry for the typo in my earlier post. The I&T manual is the FO-31. When you say that it's not very complete, what do you feel is missing? The Operator's Manual covers all routine maintenance items, like checking and changing fluids and filters and such, so they are not included in the service manual, neither the Ford factory service manual nor the I&T after market manual, as the service manuals assume that you also have access to the Operator's Manual.
