Leaky front seal? Bearing on Ford 1720

Little Ford 1720 has been leaving a puddle on the concrete floor at the right wheel. I assume needs seal or wheel bearing replaced as front axle is full of heavy oil. How hard is this to pull/replace?

There are several oil seals in the front axle reduction gear and steering. The two main leak culprits are the seal in the drop box assembly and seal on the hub spindle. Neither a terribly difficult to replace if you have some mechanical skill and the appropriate tools. The reduction gears in the wheel hub assembly are lubricated separately from the front axle with their own gear oil and if you have been losing oil from the reduction system you should at minimum top it off to keep everything well lubricated before the leaking seal is replaced. I believe the manual specifies the same trans/hydraulic fluid used in the main gear case be used in the front axle reduction gear, but I'm pretty sure regular 80/90wt gear oil would work fine. If you do replace the seals you should probably check the ring and pinion lash on the reduction gear when you reassemble it. The repair manual outlines the process, and if you decide to do it yourself investing in a digital copy of the manual is probably worth the ~$30 cost.

looks like price has gone up on the repair manuals since I bought my copy... Jensales wants $80, external_link has it for $49.95...
