4500 Diesel Starter bench testing questions.

Starter from my '66 4500TLB
It quit last week. Pulled it and changed the solenoid. Got it back in tractor . It cranked twice and went Stone Dead again.
I got it hooked directly up to a fully charged 1000ca battery. I've been able to test the starter motor. It sound pretty strong.
My question is how do I test the solenoid?
The tractor has a simply push button setup from previous owner that had worked fine for the 10 years I've owned it.
Id like to attach that push button up on my work bench so I can test it all better before putting it back in the tractor.
Now that I have pulled it twice I've gotten it down to about half an hour to pull it!
Thanks

Connect the two posts with your remote start switch as shown in the green arrows. If you don't have a remote start switch, bridging the two terminals with a screwdriver will accomplish the same results. This action should engage both the solenoid as well as the starter motor.

On this unusually warm day in Maine , temp topped out at 60f, 4500 started right up after I cleaned up all the battery cable connections , replaced the wiring going from the starter solenoid and the start button.
BUT now the alternator doesn't charge.
