Ford 3000 hydraulic pump prime

Reattaching the piston hydraulic pump on our 1966 ford 3000 and trying to get it primed again after a month of not having the pump on and disassembled (had a cover on the engine when using the tractor), I’m guessing that the hydraulic fluid already went back into the sump. Is there a way to reprime the pump or do I just crank the engine till I see fluid coming of the pump?

Loosen plug #20 in the link below. Crank and/or run the engine until fluid spits out.

You can pull the plug all the way out if you want, but I would only crank the engine, not run it, or else you'll have quite a
mess on your hands when oil comes out.

I’ll probably just run it till it comes in idle because I was cranking it for 3 minutes (not steady). I didn’t know you could run the engine when doing that. Hopefully the little hydraulic fluid that I coated the pistons didn’t come out to.

If you coated everything internally with oil when assembling the pump, you won't hurt anything to run the engine briefly to
get it primed. That said, if you still can't get the pump to prime after running the engine for 15 seconds or so, try
injecting a little bit of air pressure into the rear axle housing while running the engine at idle. Be careful not to get too
crazy here or you could potentially blow out seals.

One more thought...if it takes air pressure to get the pump to prime, then I would suspect a plugged intake screen in the axle
housing. It might be wise to go after it and clean it.

Thank you, it worked. Now I just got to figure out why the tractor won’t start after it warms up a little (it stalled and won’t start).

Take fuel line off of the bottom of the fuel tank. Make sure fuel runs continuously and freely out of the tap. I've seen more
issues with a plugged tank screen than I care to count.

I’ll check that, last I checked the fuel is coming out good. I can run the tractor all day, but if I shut down the tractor, that’s it for a bit. The tractor stalled , then when I cranked, it tried to catc but, it start started to miss when I got it going (I can usually save it with the choke but didn’t work). I know it has low compression

I know it has low compression... BTDT on the first 3cyl 2000 I worked on that was my conclusion I think the compression was in the 70's :( All systems were on go even down to the valve adjustment the owner sold it, it did not take long for the new owner to throw a rod out the side of the block...

No smoke, engine noise are nuttin that was not somewhat normal It beat me bad till I checked the compression... Nice tractor one that all would like to own that is what sold it compression told the story...

Also the chattering is loud compared to other 3000 gas's that I have heard. Friend of a friend 3000 is quite like our 8n (right after a valve adjustment). There's a cloud of black smoke when startup (I'm guessing too rich). I don't think the motor has been overhauled, just a valve job in the last 10 years. The most major thing that I could think of was something blowing up in the in the are 2000's (had to rebuild the from a parts tractor). Quick story: I guess that this was a Buyer beware, guy in town bought a Ford 3500 loader tractor, was told that the tractor ran good (cheap tractor). The new owner started to drive the tractor home (to his place). Of course the tractor knocks. So when driving it, BANG, Rod or something through the block with a torque transmission. The owner sold it to someone else.

The 2000 seamed to be over rich that is what thru me off like yours at least I masted the Holley I had my doubts was about to replace it then I went back to basics low compression was the issue...

I would check valve adjustment you never know have seen valve adjustment throw you a curve ball... They should be quite...

We did that over the summer, we did the adjustment as close as we could. Back in 2015 when we did a clutch job, we put the flywheel in the wrong spot (we just slapped it back together) and went off of tdc with a screwdriver in cylinder # 1. The valves are set to the IT book.

This is what we got once we did the valves.
