Ford 3400 rear end

Looking at buying an old 3400. I'm pretty sure the guy swapped out the back half.....and I think he may have used a 2000 as the donor. How can i tell if the rear end is off another 3400 or a 2000? I'm assuming there would be a difference (3pt lift capacity, drive axle diameter, etc?). Im also assuming that the swap would be possible since both models look so similar.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

If the profile of the axle trumpets are round then it is definitely from a 2000. If they are square then they could be from any 3000 series (3000, 3400,) or from a late 2000, as they switched the 2000 from the round to the square profile trumpets part way through the production run. Another difference is that the 2000 didn't have a flow control valve on the right side of the center housing, but that could have been moved form the previous axle so if it's there that still won't tell you for sure, but if it's not there then it is most likely a rear axle from a 2000 series.

I don't think that there is any other difference, and a square profile 2000 axle should be exactly the same in terms of strength as the 3000 axle. I don't know if the round profile axles wee any weaker of if they just switched to not have to stock as many different part numbers though.

There are some that say that they made the castings for the 3400/3500/4400/4500 model transmissions and rear axles thicker, but If that were true I don't see how they would be interchangeable with the ones from the ag chassis models like they are, and still fit the same gears inside the transmission and the same axle shafts inside the trumpets. The parts site doesn't list separate part numbers for the castings between the ag and utility/industrial castings either.

I started to write this then got
interrupted. It generally agrees with Sean
so I'll post it anyway.
It depends on the year of the 2000.
Prior to about 69? 70? the 2000 trumpets
were a bit lighter duty and had a round
cross section. Axle shafts maybe a bit
lighter too. I know they used different
bearing retainer on outer axle bearing.
After that they used the same square cross
section trumpet as the 3000/3400.
Round trumpet had no provision for
differential lock. On square it was
optional. 3 point, hyds, differential and
center housing are the same on all of
them.
If you aren't planning to hang a backhoe
on it I would have no qualms about round
trumpets.

Sean,
Your mention of different thicknesses of
castings reminded me of a repair we did to
a 5000 transmission several years ago.
Used a piece from a 7000 to fix it.
I have posted this slideshow here before.
In the last photo you can see the bell
housing on the 7000 was thicker than the
5000. Was more noticeable in person than
the picture shows.
Hover your mouse over the photos for the
accompanying dialogue.
But I agree the 2/3/34/3500 castings were
probably all the same thickness on all
those parts.

Ultradog,

The parts site lists separate part numbers for the transmission case for a plain 8 speed for the 5000 vs. the 7000. It lists a single part number for both series if it has dual power though.

I think some of the 3400 or 3500 had 9/16 bolts the trumpets to the center housing. I was looking at one Sunday that I believe had 9/16 bolts
in it.
