640 PTO Shaft Is this normal?

I got the PTO shaft out of the 640 I am refreshing as the rear seal leaks and noticed something that does not look exactly right.

Does these welds look like they should be there? Has the shaft been broken or worked on before?

I tried to look up images on Google and New Holland parts catalog but I did not see anything like this.

It has worked like this for over 40 years as my dad bought it from his uncle in 1979.

Does it has a larger place about half the length? All there is supposed to be is snapring on that side of bearing. Sleeve seals on outside of bearing.

I'm gonna guess that someone in the past had issues with the snap rings popping out of the groove, and used the sleeve and the
weld job as a way to make sure it wasn't going to move again. It's definitely not factory. Even if the factory had used a
welded spacer, they wouldn't have done that sloppy of a job.

The shaft has a larger section in the middle, sort of looks like a joint.

I don't think the sleeve was intended to keep the snap ring in place as it is way smaller than the snap ring. If the snap ring came off it would just slip over the sleeve.

I seen some PTO shafts with a sleeve connected at this point in my recent Google search.

Oh well whatever it is for factory or not I am going to put it back in as it has caused no problems so far in the last 40 years.
