My starter is shorted out. If I rebuild it
will this remedy the problem or should I
replace the starter?

I think you will find that you can buy a new one a cheaper than getting it rebuilt.

Although the new one may not be a lucus brand starter.

Not to discourage you but, I'm guessing the kit is likely a set of brushes, maybe springs, and a bushing or two, at least that is what is in most kits in that price range. Yes that might fix it, then again it might not. You posted you don't know what is shorting out and I have to expect you don't have the tools to check it to find the problem or turn the commutator if needed. There are expensive parts not in a $25 kit that can fail. Do yourself a favor, use the $25 towards either taking it to a quality rebuild shop or getting a replacement starter. JMHO

If you can rebuild it yourself you will save money and retain your OEM designed starter, which is far better than the commonly available aftermarket starters.

If you cannot rebuild it yourself and send it out to a rebuilder, all bets are off. A quality rebuilding firm will probably charge twice as much or more than an aftermarket starter will cost but you MAY still retain your OEM designed starter.

Okay thanks everyone. I haven't tried to take it apart because its been raining all day. There are some shops in town that rebuild starters. I was guessing maybe a bushing or bearing was worn out allowing something make contact with the starter case. I'm an electrician but not a mechanic. Thanks again for the help.

Aftermarket starters I have seen are clones of the original. No visible differences.

There is no source that I am aware of for a new OEM starter for a 3 cylinder Ford gas tractor.

Nor do I know of any, which is one reason why I usually rebuild rather than replace.

Over the years I replaced only 2 starters on my Fords: My 2000 4 cyl diesel finally wore out the armature shaft support, local guy redid it several times and it finally croaked, such that even with new bushings I had to smack the case with a hammer with my finger on the safety start button to get it to roll.

Second was my '65 3000 that I unknowingly bought needing a top end overhaul. It had a 4" and was supposed to have a 5". Replaced on my way to finding out what my core problem really was.

Both were online purchases, still running today, zero problems, forget how much I paid but I do recall much cheaper than I thought I'd have to pay.

(quoted from post at 14:25:29 02/02/19) I bought a new starter for my gas 3000 for $81 and had my old one rebuilt for $75. Now I have a spare.

Similar story here. Replacement starter cost $85 and had th eoriginal rebuilt for $70. Since I have the spare, the replacement starter will probably outlast my ownership of the tractor.
