steering leak

Ford 2000 gas 3 cylinder-- Started tractor in about -12 degree weather and oil pushed out of the steering column. Oil came out top of column under the steering wheel hub. The steering didn't hardly work. Don't know what oil it takes, where it fills, quantity it holds, or why it pushed the oil out. Your help would be appreciated, gregjo1948

I'm gonna guess a plugged filter in the pump, exacerbated by the cold weather.

I think you're right. Water turns to ice in the filter, plugs it up and the oil has to go somewhere. Pull the filter, and I bet it's solid ice crystals.

It depends on what date your tractor was made as to exactly where you fill the power steering reservoir. Tractors made from 1965 through 9/68 had a separate reservoir up above the pump body, near the valve cover on the left side of the tractor. Tractors made 10/1/1968 and later had a different style pump that had the reservoir integrated into the body of the pump. Both style pumps mount to the left side of the engine near the front, under the generator (or alternator if it's been converted to one). Either style will hold about a gallon maximum. Use the same M2C134D rated fluid that you use in the rear axle and transmission.

As for the leak, it is likely that it was caused by water in the system freezing up and blocking things, but now that it leaks, you will need to replace the seal in the steering column above the control valve at the least, and there may be more things in there that need to be replaced.

Get yourself a service manual if you don't already have one.

My pump is mounted by the generator and has the reservoir integrated. Is the filter, that may be iced, inside? I looked in Yesterdays parts and don't see the filter or the seal for the steering column. This tractor is the later model 2000 as it has the 3 cylinder gas engine instead of the 4 cylinder. Locating the parts would be appreciated. gregjo1948

Yes, the filter is inside the reservoir that is integrated into the body of the pump.

The filter is part labelled 23 in the parts diagram at the link below:
