Ugh, 1996 Ford4500 Diesel starter question?

While trying to crank over the 4500 yesterday I foolish kept trying as the battery weakened.

It has a starter button and what looks like the original starter.
At some point was converted the 12v Alternator/Battery.

I hear a distinctive "electrical TINK" and then starter was DOA.

As It was getting dark and bitter out I didn't try to stick starter with a screw driver as I really didn't know where exactly to stick it.
Any input would be greatly appreciated as the current Nor'Easter is dumping freezing rain down for hours now. Tomorrow maybe sheet of ice.
The 4500's Ice chains are so very good at breaking that up.
Tks

It can't be a 1996 4500. The 4500 was only made from 1965-1975. The 4500's electrical system also did not have a starter button. There was a key switch that had a Start position to the right of the Run position just like a car. If it has the factory optional thermostart system then there would have been a heat position on the original key switch to the left of the Off position, but later replacement key switches usually have the Heat position halfway between Run and Start.

As JF says, you need some sort of pre-heating system for it to start reliably in colder temperatures, either a block heater or a thermostart system.
