840 FEL sudden stop

This is a late ‘50s ford 840 in overall good shape. Was out moving snow yesterday. FEL was working fine—perhaps a bit on slow side which I chaulked up to cold temp. After 10 minutes of work the FEL suddenly stopped working—can’t raise or dump bucket. I stupidly lowered bucket to ground and was stuck until I raised it with a farm jack and chained the bucket in raised position back to front frame so I could get it back into the garage.

Controls move but nothing happens. Didnt check fluild level but No sign of fluid loss. Shaft driving pump is turning VERY slowly while engine running. After I shut off, i was able to turn shaft by hand.

There is perhaps 3/8” of front/back play on the shaft. When pushed toward pump—shaft can be turned and I can partially see the gear teeth on shaft as it enters the drive pully housing9see pix). When pushed to rear— gear teeth are hidden and shaft will not turn.

What can cause this play? What could have failed to make this happen suddenly?

My parts and shop manuals don’t cover the FEL and front hydraulics.

Thanks,

is shaft moving in and out at coupler collar? Set screws tight in collar at coupler?

Thanks for your response.

I’m ignorant of this part of the tractor—which part is the coupler collar?[/img]

he black part with set screw(s) next to the double row chain (toward radiator).

Thanks for your assistance. Set screw on the black collar was tight. There is another set screw on a different collar on the pump side of the chain. It was loose’ish.
I loosened up both—pushed the shaft as far back in towards the engine as I could and tightened up both set screws. Started up and FEL worked fine .... for about 4 routines (up, down, dump, etc.) with the FEL and then the same thing happened. I started over, tightened things up and it shifted unders load. I suspect that set screw is getting stripped preventing me from applying sufficient torque and/or the splines of the gear that mates with drive pully are damaged from excessive lash.

Not sure about my next step—I may need a mechanic to diagnose and so some surgery.

It appears that after what you did the hub and or shaft is worn out. Fairly common after years of use. They are avaible from this site.

How long have you had the tractor? Have you checked the oil? Not just engine but transmission, hydraulic, rear end, and the loader which has its own system. The underlying could be ice or slushing the system.
