4 cyl. 4000 gasser fuel shutoff

I know these lever-type shutoffs are known to be problematic. I replaced this one about 10 yrs ago and it's now leaking externally so need to replace it(can I rebuild it?). Just wondering if there's been any improvement in the replacement parts or is there anything else I should know about? Any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks, Mark

Mark, you got a good one if it did not leak right out of the box. I would replace it with the screw in type. You don't need to remove the tank to do it.

I'm unaware of any changes in the valves.

I too have had relatively good luck with lever type valves recently. IIRC, I last changed on e about five years ago. I've done it so often that I can change one in well under one houyr including getting ready and putting things away.

I've found that a drop of oil on the plunger shaft from time to time seems to prolong the life.

If I use the screw in type won't I have to change or redirect the fuel line too? I'm guessing the old ones can't be rebuilt?

So I removed the old shutoff today and brought it home. Are they interchangeable with the screw type shutoffs where they attach to the underside of the gas tank? I would like to avoid this problem in the future if possible. It appears I would have to use a different line to the carb also. Just don't want to order the screw type if they won't work.

Thanks, Mark

No they aren't interchangeable, the lever style COVs started in Jan '60 on the 172 machines after serial 126524, and had a 5/16" fuel line. Fuel lines prior to S/N 126524 were 1/4" and utilized the screw type COV.

I switched my 1961 901 from the lever style to the screw style. It was leaking so I got a new one that leaked as soon as I got it installed. From various threads here at YT I knew that many posters had similar problems with the lever type. Not wishing to keep going back to it I ordered up a screw type. I installed it with a stub of 1/4 steel tube and bridged from the 1/4 to 5/16 with a short length of rubber just as the OEM line is made. No big deal. This was around six years ago.

So my main question is, do they both mate up to the bottom of the gas tank the same way. Meaning I would only have to worry about replumbing the gas line to the carb. Is that correct?

Sounds good. Thanks for the info.

Hi,

I realize this is an old post, but likely a recurring problem. I have a 2000 Gasser 134" with the screw type cutoff. It was froze, so I ordered a 311292 as a replacement. It leaks out of the box around the valve threads when open. It seems dry when closed. From the product reviews, these seem to frequently leak out of the box. Can the threaded stem be pulled out to try and reseal it (packing? O-ring?) or is the solution just keep buying valves until I get a good one?

thanks,

-Bob
