I am not a deseil mechanic but I am going to look at a 6610 tractor that the owner says the rpm goes up and down. It does not stop but slows for a minute and then picks back up. Can you please give me some ideals as what to look for and check. Could the pump cause this and how can I check that.
thank you
Dale

RPM oscillation under a constant load about has to be an internal injection pump issue, specifically a sticking governor. If the injection pump is the older, separate reservoir style that needs to have its oil changed (like an engine), start by doing just that, changing the oil. If it slowly gets better, try changing it again and monitor for gradual improvement. In a worst case scenario you'll have to remove the pump and disassemble it to free up the governor, which is not a job for someone who is not a diesel mechanic.
