861 Grinding

I have what I believe is a Ford 861 with a grinding noise only during drivetrain engagement. It is quiet when the PTO engages but when it goes to move, it grinds. After engagement everything seems ok. Does anyone have any input for me? I have split the tractor and found no issues with the clutch. I have slack in the center shaft going into the transmission. My serial number shows like this... One of my friends talked about a planetary bearing?

there's no planetary bearing in an 861. Must have transmission or rear end issues. does this happen in certain gears or in all of them?

All of them but only during engagement.

In other words, the transmission clutch is not completely releasing??? If you can totally release the PTO clutch, but not the transmission clutch, you need to have your clutch rebuilt or replaced.

I tried to reply earlier. The tractor grinds as the tractor engages to go forward, not as it is put into gear and only when the tractor goes into motion. I have one question after looking further into the splines of my clutch discs. Does the disc closest to the flywheel engage the transmission? It looks pretty worn.

Yes! Front disc is transmission clutch. Still sounds like something with the clutch if it occurs only on takeoff.
