Pwr steering pump leaks into crank case

73 4000 P/S Oil needs topping off frequently, motor oil level is increasing. How
about adding 10w40 motor oil to P/S when needed and drain off the crankase as
neccessary? I found a reply by Sound Guy on another site suggesting it. Thanks

yes, if its leaking into the crank, you can run the same oil as the engine as a short term stop gap. You can rebuild the pump, you can get an "el cheapo" pump off of ebay for $120 bucks. All will work, but you need to watch the engine level so that you dont over fill it too much. As others have said... the rebuild may not last long if there is play in the shaft from wear. however new soft seals are ALWAYS better than 50 year old rock hard seals everytime.

I was going to replace seals in a pump I had but found the pump housing was worn alowing the shaft to move around. New seal would not help so just get a new pump. The pump has no bushings in it.

When the front seal went in the p/s pump on my '73 4000 it went all at once. No "topping off frequently", it would drain the reservoir into the crankcase in about 5 seconds after filling and starting the engine. So my only choice was rebuild or replace, so I did both. I got a replacement off the internet for a short term fix and got the seal kit for the old one so I would have one on hand in case the new one didn't last as long as the original.
