Ford 3910 brake rod seal replacement

Well, I'm about to go in for a miner surgery on the tractor replacing the brake rod seal on the right side; it's leaking. Since I'm doing this I might as well change the Hydraulic/Axle fluid. What oil should I refill? 1988 Ford 3910.

Thanks!

Thanks. This stuff comes up in searches and is available at Walmart, but I don't mind spending more if this is junk.

That Walmart store brand is fine. I wish either of my local Walmarts carried it. I've got two Walmarts, each about 6 miles away, but neither one carries it, and I live in a semi-rural area. I use a similar house brand called "Travellers Premium" from Tractor Supply, which is usually a couple of bucks more for a 5 gallon bucket than the Walmart store brand.

You have wet brakes. Gotta go with premium...134C is in the manual as I reall and that's above the A,B general purpose specs. The I &T for that tractor
is FO-40 and ebay has them priced right.

Where is your exhaust, Vert or out the rear? How loud is the engine? Mine is out the rear, new muffler, and still the engine is really loud as compared
to my 2 and 3000s. Idle is about all I can stand without ear protection.

Are you saying go with travelers premium?

Mines out the top.

Nice paint. Yes on Travellers Premium...last 5 gal I bought still had 134D and J20C (the two specs I follow) listed in the applicable specs on the label.....which are disappearing fast on some oils
like 134 AB/J303....seems a rift by OEMS not liking after markets to quote their specs....don't know the particulars.

Something else that may be of interest to you. When I checked the oil, during the pre-purchase tire kicking session, the engine oil was typical diesel black. When I got it home the first thing I did was to change the oil/filter. Later on I worked it for an hour or so and oil was dirty again. Drained that oil out and stuck my finger in the oil drain hole to find about ⅛-?" of sludge on the bottom of the crankcase.

Put new oil in with some "snake oil" (full can of Sea Foam) and ran it at low to moderate rpm (unloaded) for half an hour. While the oil was still hot I drained it out, reached in and felt the pan and the sludge was gone. Put in new oil and another filter and later worked it for a couple of hours. Checked the oil and it was mostly clear.

Seems that in 30 years, 900 hours means a lot of sitting. Having conducted the test accidentally on old oil still in a clear plastic drain pan, over time, the contaminants in black oil fall to the bottom and the once dirty oil becomes remarkable clear. Same thing obviously happened in the crankcase.

These are the later ribbed block engines which had a good number of improvement for flow and power, they also seem to have a lot more bark under load.
