What do I have? Ford tractor.

I have a tractor that was yellow at one point. It has been painted blue with new 4600 decals. Identifying numbers. 1st one: DW412K. 2nd: 4K153. 3rd: *732430*. I have a hydraulic problem but identifying the tractor is my first step. Any help would be great.

DW4 = 540B Industrial 1984-1988
1 = Diesel engine
2 = 540 transmission PTO
K = 6x4 Manual reversing transmission

4K153 = October 15, 1984. The last ?3? should be a A, B, or C for which shift

Last number is the serial number, you have what I consider one of the baddest mid-sized industrials out there
 

Thanks Joe! So far it has been a great little tractor. I may be looking at needing a new clutch sometime soon, i really need to come to a complete stop and idle down to shift into another gear.

So on to the current problem, I was out with the bushhog Saturday and the hydraulics just quit working. I could not raise the loader or the bushhog. The hydraulic pump on the left side of the bellhousing with the filter on it makes a little noise when you try to raise front or back. I pulled the filter and the fluid was really dark with a very fine silver tent(metal) to it.

Thoughts? change fluid and filter would be my next thought.
 
If that tractor was configured from the factory with a loader then the loader should have a separate pump up at the nose of the tractor.

The pump on the left side of the bell housing should just be for the 3 point lift. If it is powering the loader then it has been changed form the original setup, and the loader is probably fairly slow moving.

Your symptoms sound like the brake linings are disintegrating and clogging the filter. Short term fix is to replace the fluid and filter. To fix it right you need to pull both axle trumpets and replace the brake disks inside, then flush the sump until its clean.

I think that with a trans driven PTO on a manual reverser that is unlikely. The engine mounted pump was used as an extra if the tractor already had the pump in the right side for the independent PTO, but I don't think that they ever did the reverse, add a pump in the right side as an extra if it didn't have the independent PTO, but I have been wrong on more than one occasion, so that might be the case here.

This is true, if it doesn't have ind pto it won't have the right side pump, my 4500 has the engine mounted pump.
Just trying to figure out if it has the duel pump system like my 6610.
 

Thanks Guys, there is a "???transfer block???" in front/under the seat with a leaver, push it back and the loader works...slow...pull it forward and the 3 point lift works. The only external hydraulic filter is on the side engine pump at the bell housing. You engage the PTO with a lever on the left side of the tractor just below the seat. The PTO works in forward or reverse.
 
What you're calling a transfer block sounds like a selector valve or diverter valve, which changes the flow from the internal path for the 3 point lift to the external path for an external attachment like a loader.

The silvery metallic look to the fluid in the filter is almost certainly because the brake material is breaking down and contaminating the fluid.

As I suggested, you can get the hydraulics to work again by replacing the fluid and the filter but the filter is going to clog up again in fairly short order, but at lest changing them will prove that is what the problem is.

The correct fix is to replace the brake disks and then flush the sump out and then put new fluid and filter in.
 

Well,

New Fluid and Filter, no change. it takes about 3 min. for the 3point to raise and longer for the bucket.

Also,
The diverter valve or selector valve has three positions. When it is back it if for the loader, the center position works the 3 point, not sure whats supposed to happen when you take it foward, but when you do, it does strain the engine ever so slightly and nothing else happens.

Any ideas would be great!
 
Did all of the fluid that came out have that silvery tint?

Were there any larger pieces of material in the oil?

The brake material that causes that silvery tint could have clogged something else besides the external filter. I am not 100% sure on that model but there may also be a screen on the suction tube inside the center housing. You may need to replace the oil several times to flush everything out. Or you may have to pull the top cover and flush the sump

The broken down brake lining material could have clogged or damaged the pump as well.

Check your hydraulic hoses. I have the same setup on a Ford 2000. It is a manual lever used to put hydraulics to the 3pt or to the loader. If yours is set up like mine, and I believe it is, there should be a larger diameter hose coming off of the bell housing of the rear axle just to the right of your seat. They had elbowed off of the fill hole for hydraulic fluid and ran the large hose to the loader. The elbow had somehow worked itself loose. I could "wiggle" it just enough that my 3pt functioned correctly as did the loader.

Hopefully it can be as simple as that. Also, check your fluid level as well.
