Ford 640 steering

Well, I found my fo-20 service manual, however I can't understand what I need to do to fix the slop in my steering. Can anyone help me out here please.

First you've got to figure out where the "slop" is. Also, does it have power steering? If it has power steering, does the steering wheel move noticeable up or down when you begin to turn it in one direction or another. It should move about 3/16" to maybe 5/16" maximum, but much more than that then the upper thrust bearing is probably worn.

If it's got manual steering, or if the check above on the power steering says that the thrust bearing is OK, then check to see when you start to turn the wheel if the sector arms start moving immediately or does it take some noticeable movement of the wheel before the arms begin to move?

If the arms don't move right away then there is slop in the sector gears inside the gear box. It may be that they just need to be shimmed properly, or it may be that the gears themselves may be worn and need to be replaced.

If the arms move immediately when the wheel is turned, then the slop must be in the external linkage from the arms out to the wheels, which is most likely ball joints that need to be replaced.
