Dieselin the oil pan

73 4000 201 engine oil level twice normal on dip stick.
Return lines are all external, dumps into tank filler neck, no stand pipe.
I suspect front injector pump shaft seal for leak into crank case. Could this fuel
in the pan be a result of not closing the fuel tank shutoff valve on shut down or is
it happening while running? Thx Jim in Baton Rouge

Could very well be the injection pump drive seal, have a Perkins pump apart for that right now. Can also be the cold start Thermostart unit in the intake manifold if the tractor has one.

Usually caused by power steering pump, leaking into the timing cover. Can be caused by the engine mounted hydraulic pump on left rear (depends on where your pump is located), and.... can be caused by injection pump seal.

Power steering is easy as you notice it pretty quick. The other two dont show obvious symptoms.

The diesel leak will cause thinning of oil and loss of oil pressure on the gauge (if You have one) when warm and is considered dangerous to the main bearings and other surfaces.

Forgot to say that if equipped with a "engine mounted" fuel pump, that can also be a source of leaking into the crankcase as well.

Must be the power steering pump. I'm told that the fluid needs topping off every
time its used! Is seal replacement something an experienced shade tree mechanic
could handle? Thank, Jim in Baton Rouge

getting the orings back into the pump and shaped like a figure 8 is a devil to do when putting the pump halves back together. The seals for the front shaft are easy. BUT... if the pump is worn and has shaft play, the new seals may not last long. You can get a rebuild kit for around 20 bucks with the orings and seals. Again, getting round orings to set like a figure eight will drive you to drink, but if finally can be done.
