Ford 4000 3cyl

The European serial numbers are not well documented, but I would guess that it is a late 1967 or early 1968 serial number. I am not at home so I don't have access to my references, but I do have one with the serial numbers for when they switched to the new sheet metal style on 4/1/68 and I believe that it was in the B088xxx range. I can tell you for sure on Monday.

Do you have the other two numbers stamped in the same spot as the serial number?

Hard to determine the year of tractors built in Basildon, England by the serial number.
New models built after 41/68 start with #B851097 so guessing yours would be a 69-70 model.

Look in the area where you found the serial number for the model and production codes, the production code will give the day it was built.

Looked at the numbers wrong.
Domestic models after 4/1/68 start with B851097
Export models after 4/1/68 start with B088828
You tractors B086197 makes it a export model built before 4/1/68

Need the other codes to get closer.

(quoted from post at 11:48:17 11/04/18) model 410240 unit 8D 1B engine 264347 7 D 03 Thanks

410240 is the model number but the last 0 isn't correct
4 = 4000 series
10 = all purpose model
2 = gas engine
4 = ind. 540 pto
0 = ?, most likely a C which is for 8x2 manual trans

8D1B is a very interesting build date, especially with your tractors serial number

8 = 1968
D = April
1 = 1st day of the month
B = Day shift

April 1 1968 is the day new model production was supposed to begin with engine and cooling system improvements, sheet metal and grill changes where also made around that time
I would like to see a photo of your tractor.

According to info I was given Basildon export 4000's built beginning on April 1 1968 should begin with serial number B088828 but ours is B086197.
Also if D703 is the engines production number it was built on April 03 1967, one year before the tractor, if the engine hasn't been changed the dates should be much closer, like within a month or two.

Check all of the numbers and post photos if you can

Destroked,

The documentation I have says that they actually produced some "old model" tractors after they started producing the "new models" on 4/1/68, and I believe that the "old model" tractors continued to have serial numbers lower than the "new model" starting numbers, even though they may have been produced on or after the date that they started producing the "new models". So there I think that there is some overlap with serial numbers and dates around that time.

My memory was correct for once. The "new model" serial numbers did start ar B088xxx on 4/1/68. Se my other reply to Destroked. Since it has a B086xxx serial number and a unit number of 8D1B, it was made on 4/1/68 and it is an "old model" tractor.

Destroked gave you the correct model number info, it's a 4000 ag chassis tractor with a gas engine, independent 540 rpm PTO and most likely an 8 speed transmission (C as the last character instead of a O or 0).

The only info I have on the Euro models is the few pages you sent me.
Still curious as to the nearly one year difference in the engine date.

Destroked,

The US Service Manual says :

Note: For an interim period previous model and new model tractors were being produced simultaneously; however there were no previous model tractors produced with a date code after 8G19B.

So I assume that the same was true for European made tractors, but I don't have any proof of that.

Funny that I never paid much attention to that note, but it does help explain a 4000 gas tractor I scraped several years back.
Production date was July 3, 68, every thing about the tractor was new model but it had a 192 gas engine instead of a 201, engine was built in June of 68.
I was disappointed because I was needing a 201 crank.

Are those numbers from a sticker under the hood or were they on the actual parts? Those numbers agree better with the Unit Number than the engine number does, but if it was truly one of the last older model 4000's, then it would have a 192 ci engine and maybe they had been gearing up for the newer model 4000's by making a bunch of the 201 gassers so they needed to pull an almost one year old one off the shelf to get a 192.

So the engine number was from the sticker under the hood also? If so, then my suspicion that they pulled an old engine off of the shelf to get a 192 for an "old model" 4000 seems sound.
