How much if any gas should come out of carb air intake?

Odd question I know, but having a hard time starting my old 600. I noticed when I take the air connection off the carb, it will leak gas out when I pull the choke out, then push it back in.

Is this a symptom of a leaky needle valve?

no.. its a symptom of the gas being cold and not vaporizing... especially when choking a cold engine. assuming its drops not gallons... Most updraft carbs will do this when cold and being choked... its about the only way to get fuel up to the engine.

leave the intake hose/pipe off of your carb. let it set and see if any fuel comes out. that will tell you if your needle valve is leaking or not. I always shut my fuel off when its running and I am going to shut it down. to me it helps your needle valve. then when I sart it I valve the fuel in and hit the start switch and if it doesn't start immediately I choke it for a second. seems to work for me but every tractor seems different.

Larry, it is perfectly normal. The "mist" of gasoline that is in the air when you stop cranking is coming back down. These tractors,, when cold, usually require a good amount of choke to start.
