Hydraulic pump gear.

I'm working on my '63 4000.

I was going to put my hydraulic pump back onto my engine, and was looking at the drive gear. How much slop should there be with the drive gear. I "Unfortunately" think, mine is bad. I can move it, by turning it back & forth on the shaft, and wobble it side to side some also. It's a piston pump.

I would like you to tell me that, that is normal, BUT, I don't think your going to. It's been par for this tractor.

Remember me saying, Every bolt I remove, it's holding something that needs to be repaired, or replaced. I still have bolts that I have not removed yet. LOL I want to cry, but my mother told me that never helps anything. When ever I cry, my wife asks me "how much is it going to cost"

Thanks, Pat

Not normal. Should be tite on shaft. Has splines inside. The back and forth is caused by loose bolt that is part of tach drive.

Pat, I have one on that 172 gas that you got the crank pulley off of. I can pull
the cover tomorrow and look it over, you would be welcome to it if your
interested. Let me know Bill. My email should be open if you don't still have my
address.

Yes it should be a tight fit, but I doubt that you can tighten that little 1/4 bolt tight enough, on a diesel engine, to make it last forever!

Well, I took some time today before coming in, and pulled the hyd pump apart. After I removed the cable adaptor off the end. I could not get the bolt loose that holds the gear on. So I unbolted the end of the casing. Which pushed off because of the pump springs, and then the shaft fell out. I mean the shaft came out of the gear, with the bolt that holds it on, still in. The gear is slopy on the shaft,. I have not checked it out good yet, to see if the shaft is wore also. What is suppose to hold the gear on, under the bolt?

Thanks, Pat

We had a remote valve on a tractor that would not kickoff under pressure. It will give any gear a fit when there's no where for the pressure to go except through the relief valve. Wear goes from pump gear to cam gear to camshaft gear to crank gear or reverse of that. I had to change the camshaft and crank gears. I remember doing it inframe but dont know how. I think I was young and dumb then and just beat them back on. I know better now and I install a pressure light on any valve that sticks in the on position. Pat, Ive seen some of those gears pretty sloppy like that. They will wear as the bolt doesn't really hold the gear pressure once its worn some.

If you look close, it has the toothed washer on it. It looks like someone didn't put the flat washer back on, when they worked on it. So now the gear is worn out in the splines, and now wobbles on the shaft.

Thanks, Pat

I was able to buy a NIB gear for cheap. I have it installed, it fit's snug, unlike the old one. Just waiting to get a new O-ring. The pump wobble looks real good, no wear on it. I did not open the intake.

You can tell that someone had opened it up at one time, specially because of the washer being missing.

Thanks, Pat
