Son of a batch! I can finally get my diesel engine timed right on!!!

I have installed my cam, and installed the engine on to the tranny. I put everything on, and brought #1 up to 23 degrees, went into the shop and grabbed the injector pump, put it on, and the timing is finally right on the marks.

I tore the injector pump apart many times. After the first couple of times, was sure my problem was not in the pump, but did not know where it was. After I was able to get a Ford tractor mechanic come over, and looked at it. He told me it was inside. I thought the same.

It turned out to be a few things wrong inside, but mostly a bad keyway on the cam. Who ever rebuilt the engine used a cam with the keyway already bad.

I learned a lot about the difference between the gas, and diesel cam. Mostly, that they are not the same, even though they are the same. But never say they are the same. Before '65 no!, they are not interchangeable. A diesel cam must have "DIESEL" & "310377" casted into the shaft, to be a diesel cam.

Now I can start to put every thing back together, and finish repairing things as I go & paint. That is what started all this last fall. It took till now, to get it all figured out.

Now I can replace the pin & bushing, and replace the spindle thrust bearings, and the axle bearings. Then I can put the wheels back on. Then put the steering sector back together, and back on. Whewww!

Then I can get it rewired, and started, to find out how everything behind the engine is working.

I've had projects like that. Knee deep but I'm standing on my head!
Hopefully it all works out well for you! :)

My wife asked if she could put a flower pot on top of it. I said, not funny! She say's it's sitting to close to my '27 Ford coupe, it's just sleeping, I tell her.

This thing thinks it can kick my butt, But I told it BS, I will win, I keep saying I will win, I will win............. I just don't know when! There is still bolts I have not touched yet. I will win!

(quoted from post at 23:48:04 10/28/18) That is good to hear, thanks for following up, I would not have guessed a sheared key.

David,
The key was not sheared, the key is ok. It was sheared at some time, but not now. The keyway slot, was messed up, and the key had lots of slop. It looked like it was the wrong size key at first, but it fit's the gear key slot perfect. The keyway is to wide. You can see where they had filed some to smooth out the burs it had.
