Have a 1964 4000 gas row crop with SOS trouble, no park, only gears that work are 5,6,7,8,9, and 10. Band 2 pressures per the IT chart are 170 PSI on R2,R1 N,1,2,3,4,9, and 10. Band 3 has 170 PSI on 5,6,7,8,9, and 10, 0 PSI on Park,R2,R1,N,1,2,3, and 4. Pressure chart shows Band R2 should be pressurized too, but I'm not sure that's right as the FO173 chart shows Band 3 is applied with spring pressure, and released with oil pressure. I suspect band strut out of place, or band broken, or some other trouble. Tried the band adjustment screw, made no change at all. Bought the tractor at auction, shows 4855 hours on the working tach. Say the strut is out of place, how much work is involved getting it back where it belongs? Does the third band break? Wondering if it should be repaired or scrapped. Has new rubber on the rear, could be parted out possibly. Thanks for all input.

I've never seen a band break - they're pretty stout. Since you say that you have no park, and adjustment does not help, then I'm going to say that indeed a strut likely fell out. If it's band #3, it won't be too much work. Split the tractor and remove some of the guts out of the back and it's right there. If you can follow a manual, it won't be all that bad.

Thanks, Bern. Looks like a winter job if I can find room to drag it in. I suspect someone backed the adjusting screw out too far, but not sure. What have you seen hour wise far as input spline and drive hub wear? Wondering if that's the next issue. Also have an 871 diesel with the original SOS, need to check the pressure as the PTO did slip on the dyno at 38HP. It looks rough, but runs well.

The amount of spline wear is heavily dependent on how often it was shifted during its life. If it did a lot of back and forth loader work, it could likely be near failure. If it did a lot of light work, such as raking, the splines could be in very good shape. Stated another way, there's just no way to know for sure without splitting it and taking a close look.

Neither tractor has ever had a loader, so that's a plus. Question, before doing a tans-diff split on the 4000 does the lift cover need to come off also?

Band 3 is your culprit. It is not applying. As has been suggested this is not a hydraulic issue, but a mechanical one.

Dropped strut or other issue with the B# mechanism.

Looking at the service manual and parts list shows a small pin in the servo rod/spring assembly. Question, how will the transmission act if that pin breaks? Can that pin breaking also allow one or both band struts falling out of place, or is it more likely backing the screw out too far is the cause? Thanks
