172 Diesel replace Cam Gear in Chassis?

Anyone ever replace Camshaft Gear in Chassis. Manual says Camshaft has to be removed and gear Pressed on. I work on cummins and Cats and we just hot plate the gear and they slide on. Want to know if anyone has done that with the Ford Engine?

I just replaced the cam in my 4000 tractor with a 172. When I went to remove mine, I thought the gear was going to break, from the puller, darn near as tight as I could get it, with the use of a oxy/acetylene torch, and getting the gear red.

I originally just wanted to pull the gear to check the key in it, and was told, forget it, pull the engine. You can't get it back on, you can't hit on in. There is a hydraulic pump gear on the back end of the cam also.

I ended needing a new cam. I am just going to install the engine tomorrow.

You might press them on with the retainer plate bolt holes and heat, buuuut I haven't done that and don't know if that would do it. I'll have to try that on an engine I'm going to pull anyway when I get to it.
 

Doing that would mean that you are pressing all that pressure against the center of the rear gear cover, with the bolts on the cam, to hold it from pushing it out the back. allowing it to bow the cover out

Then you'd have part of my problem, they did to mine. The rear gear bolts rubbed the heads down, that hold the gear on. Then the timing would not be right also, because the cam is moved back, leaving a gap between the cam, the cam gear. Part of what was my timing problem.

I would not do it.

That is when I found out, What EVER!!! you do, don't F- up your diesel cam, if it's a '64 and older engine. You will NOT be able to buy a new one. Trust me. I have been looking, and calling across the country to new cam makers, and grinders. There is no such animal. Only a gas cam, and they are different, no matter what they tell you. Unless it has "DIESEL" & "310377" cast into it from the factory.

Never mind if it a '65 and later engine. They are the same cam.
