generator discharge

The 601 ford that I have been working is positive ground with a generator it has been setting for years and I had to replace the voltage regulator now it shows discharge when I start it and amp hand bounces all over the place I see a post about polarizing the generator I do not see a ground wire going from the generator so I assume it is internal grounded.
will polarizing the generator take care of this charging issue?

Should have an armature wire on the end plate of the Genny, and a small redundant ground wire on the housing, nonetheless, its frame grounded by mounting bracket, unless heavily painted, rusted, etc.

Disconnect vreg, jumper bat hot to armature and field. Poof, its polarized.

Make sure you are hooking up the ground polarity you think you are, and that your add on ampmeter is wired how you think it is, 01's left the factory with a charge lamp, not a meter.

Once you tackle that, verify your polarity with a VOM.

If all is correct and charge bounces around is the only issue it usually means its a junky a cheap vreg.. Though, a cheap junky uncompensated ammeter can be nervous..

hould have GND and FLD terminals on barrel and ARM terminal on rear plate. If it has had the cut out contacts closed then it is already polarized.

I had a similar problem with my NAA. It turned out to be a junk V.R. I replaced that with an Echlin from NAPA.

I polarized the generator and then checked with an amp clamp and amp clamp shows 19 amps and a little over 7 volts so it is charging thanks for the replies

..............and the original ammeter 'jumping all over the place" now looks fine? Perhaps the ampclamp would have indicated good. too, even before 'polarizing'?
