Have a friend who has a 4400 that is FWA
but the front end don't seem to want to
work. I don't know Ford tractors and just
trying to help them. I'm an Allis man
honestly but with some tips in the right
direction can usually figure stuff out. Any
help with this front end?

Ford did not offer factory FWA on a 3 cylinder tractor till the late 80s or thereabouts and a 4400 was built from 65-75. So if it is in fact a 4400 the fwa is either aftermarket or grafted on from a newer model.
I would start by getting the 3 lines of code that are hand stamped on the flat spot on the bell housing just above and behind the starter. You'll likely have to scrape sone paint or crud to read them.
Post them and maybe someone can offer advice on what you have and you can go from there.
Photo shows the 3 lines of code on a typical 3 cyl Ford.

He asked because of you said you didn't know fords and the easy way to tell is the 1964 and older tractors were 4 cylinder engines, and the 1965 up were 3 cylinder in the 4000 series. The '64 and older front assist axles were after market add on's by at least two different vendors. The '65 up 3 cylinder were not available in North America with a front assist till the XX10 series. The X600 three cylinder didn't have a FWA axle, but there was one available on the later 5600 thru 7700 from '77 up. The axle units were supplied by ZF, or Carraro depending on model with the drop boxes, mounting, etc. supplied from in house. One of the guys from the UK might be able to tell us if County Commercial Cars Ltd. made an add on for the 2,3,4000 3 cylinder tractors.

If it is a 3 cylinder tractor, then in addition to the location of the numbers that Ultradog provided, there also might be a sticker on the under side of the right side hood panel, above the battery. If that sticker is there it should have the same 3 numbers that Ultradog mentioned as well as some other numbers.
