Does tractor have to split to repair pto brake and
clutches on a 1972 Ford 8000? Or can it come out
the side. I?ve heard anything after 1970 had to split.

Technically, it can come out the side. That said, it's much easier to split in my opinion, especially if you have to move or remove a rear wheel to work out the side.

I'm not sure what the 1970 date has to do with the ability to work out the side. Nothing really changed inside during that era.

I think someone mentioned that after a certain year a part was made larger and wouldn’t fit out the side, but I could have that wrong.

Not that I'm aware of. As I said, if it was me, I'd do a split. I firmly believe that, when you consider the amount of labor involved for
both options, it ends up being a wash. I also believe that you can do a better job in the end with a split.

So,if i'm understanding correctly, according to tractor data, the 9000 came out in 1970, and that same year the pinion boss was made larger on the 8000 so 1972 8000 tractor must be split to repair the pto brake and clutches as opposed to pulling from the side. Bern, I understand it would be much easier access by splitting, but I don't have any splitting stands and seems like quite a bit more labor since this tractor has a cab, plus fabricating stands to split. It was a tractor I am considering purchasing, so just seeing how much involved to repair.
