Stiff shifting SOS

Brought home a 1964 4000 row crop narrow front from an auction, has not run in three years. Moved it in the shop with the disconnect, and after cleaning the carb have it running. Noticed the SOS shift lever is very stiff moving, not like the 871 diesel I have also. Thinking the transmission top cover may need to come off, but wonder if the trouble could be the cable is dry/rusty? Tach/hourmeter shows 48XX hours, and still works. Tractor has set outside for quite a long time it appears, tach face is very rusty. Anyone else see a stiff moving shift lever, and what repairs should I plan for? Thanks in advance.

Sitting outside, yes could be rusty cable. Could be tight shaft bushings in the control handle assembly. Could also be slight mis-alignment of the tranny top cover to the case. Shop manual tells how to align.
