Ford 4000 Diesel - Blue Smoke?

It has been a while since I have been here, last visits was trying to get generator to change battery. Never got it figured out and just settled with keeping changed with AC charger. Will tackle that another time.
If it cranks or I have to jump start I leave it running until through for the day. Which is a few hours of grading our road. So total time on the tractor since I have owned it is somewhere between 50 to 100 hours at most. Last time I used it I had to jump it off and it gave a few good puffs of dark / black smoke. After running for about 2-3 hours I was through and pulled under the pine trees to wash it. I got a phone call and sat on the deck talking. I was looking at the tractor running at a low idle and noticed the smoke looked blue and seemed to be more and more as time went, maybe 25 minutes (normally do not talk that long on a phone, one of my sons that had not called in a long time) Finally I told him I had to check the tractor. When I revved it up a bit it seemed to clear. I finished washing it and move it to park and the smoke seemed to clear up somewhat. I would have thought it would have been more black. I don't know any history of this tractor before I had it but would not think the short amount of time I have used it that anything would be out of tune. I mentioned this to a friend at church the next day that knows some about engines. He said maybe the fuel filter needs changing, that it could cause the blue smoke. Said to just take it loose put the new filter in.
So if that is the case and the filter needs replacing, I would need to order one from here or somewhere as I doubt our parts house would have that for this age tractor.
Second, when we got the tractor a couple of years ago my Dad warned and continues to remind me, to Never let it run out of fuel! He did some soy bean farming years ago and says that I would have to get someone to come prime it to get it started. Having no experience with diesel engines and him being 86 yr and Dad, I just take it as Fact. So if I remove the filter holder will it lose prime? If in fact that is the cause. It has always been very smoke free (I have wonder was the engine was rebuilt) and runs very smooth, will idle at very low RPM.

Thanks

Generally speaking any diesel without an exhaust filter will put up some smoke when idling or when operating without a load as in down hill. Generally as well if it is unburned fuel because it was just started and is not up to temperature yet it will be very pale almost white. Generally blue smoke is due to burning crank case oil which will happen usually if the rings or valve guides are worn out.

Sitting idling it is wet stacking. As the slobber builds it will smoke some.

It'd help if we knew which 4000 you have for further questions. There were 2 different versions of the 2 & 4 thousands.
