I am replacing a 4 speed transmission with the Sherman combination on a 821 with a loader and backhoe. I located a 4 speed from a 841 and was all set to set the transmission in place, that is when I noticed that the out-put shaft on the replacement transmission has 23 splines and the old one has ten splines. So off to a bone-yard I go. They said they never seen that on a 4 speed.
They did have a coupling from a SOS that had 23 splines, so I bought that at $125. I took the two pieces to a Machine Shop and for another $150, they will join the two together to make it 23 spline on one end and 10 spline on the other. I guess that should work. I told them that shaft had to run true and there was no room for error. I did not know that there is different splines on different 4 speed transmissions on 601 or 801 series tractors.

My 841 has the fine splined input shaft. Didn't realize there were different splined shafts until I got home with the wrong clutch.

Didn't know about the input shaft change, but the output shaft was changed somewhere in the production run of the '01 series.

Thanks everybody, especially Kirk-NJ. You hit the nail on the head. The replacement transmission is 99000 something and the one I took out was 44000 something.I learned something this week! I got the drive-line back this afternoon. Looks like the machine shop did a good job.
