Ford 5000 SOS problem

hi

i have a ford 5000 sos tractor that had been sitting around for a few years because it wouldn't drive but we recently got it going and fixed the problem (needed a new oil pump in the tranny) but we are having trouble getting it to drive.

we adjusted the bands according to the book but didn't have much luck with getting it to move, when we play around with the bands sometimes we can get 1 reverse and a couple of forward gears or sometimes we get reverse but struggle to get it to select a forward gear.

we don't know a hell of a lot about these boxes so i'm hoping someone on here might be able to help us out.

2. With an SOS, you need to be a whole lot more specific about what it does and what it doesn't do to get any kind of a diagnosis. However, have you checked servo pressures since putting a pump in?

3. This site does not use expletives!!! If you can't say it without them, it's best not to say it at all.

You will need to get a manual. There are a lot of adjustments that need to be sequential. I have found that band adjustments are only a very slight amount, and only to compensate for wear which is very slight.

As I pondered this during the day . . . I'm wondering what made you think it needed a hydraulic pump? Did you find a new pump? Did you check hydraulic pressures before and after changing the pump?

I'm guessing your pump replacement didn't fully address the issue!

so a few years back we were using the tractor and it just stopped driving one day, we had someone come and look into finding the problem as much as we could without splitting the tractor, as far as i can remember he played with the band adjustment and not sure what else you could do from the outside.

anyway, just recently we decided we would have a crack at fixing it, it had been sitting outside and fired up just about straight away, we got it in the shed and split it to find that the spline gear in the oil pump had broken in half which explains why it stopped driving all those years ago.

picked up a 2nd hand pump from an old bloke in town that had a spare.

we haven't checked the pressures yet, that will be next.

so when the tractor has been sitting running for a little while (to try warm it up a bit) we adjusted the bands to the manual specs, now we can get 1 reverse gear but the lever shows that its in 1st gear and we can usually get it to pick up 1 random forward gear.

once the tractor gets even warmer it gets harder to pick up any gears.

also we followed the book instructions to align the gear selector cable and gear lever into the selector in the bottom of the box.

hopefully you all can understand that and it helps a little bit.

also it does sound like its pumping from the noise you can hear coming from the box, a sort of buzzing noise that sounds like oil going through valves i guess and when you move the lever to park it goes quiet.

This tells me you likely have a sizable internal leak. Do some pressure testing and post back with your findings. I'd like to see both cold
and warm oil readings.

Yup! get us some pressures to work with here. I'm guessing with Bern that you have a significant leak somewhere.

or your "new" bloke pump is not pumping pressure.
