Is there any other way to determine the year when there's no traces of the serial number? Appears battery acid over time did a good job erasing the stamping. All I can tell so far is it's diesel, SOS transmission, with the late hood mounted air cleaner, single speed PTO. Could there be a chance the transmission was replaced, and never stamped? Thanks in advance.

what number is on the transmission by your left heel? Is it C3NN- 7006 - B or is 312259?

Look at date code stampings on components. This has been just been discussed recently and my times before that. Do a search.

Look particularly at the tag on the radiator.

Dealers were to restamp original Model and S/N on replacement transmissions. Some didn't get done. However diesels were bad at etching the numbers away because of battery acid drip.

My 671 SOS transmission has a 312259 number on it and the tractor is a 1959 based on it's serial number.

My '59 971 has no number and no evidence of acid damage. The radiator tag is 1959. It also has a Ford T&I tag.

(quoted from post at 21:42:15 10/16/18) My 671 SOS transmission has a 312259 number on it and the tractor is a 1959 based on it's serial number.

312259 was the original SOS and OEM transmission in all '01 series tractors to the best of my knowledge. I think the C0NN-7006-B came out in 1960 in some of the of the earliest 000 series industrial modes, but not in ag models until the early 000s in late '62. Sometime in '63 (I'm not sure when) the C3NN-7006-B came out. Therefore this C3NN was the transmission that replaced the 312259 under the Ford SOS program in the mid '60s.

I have both a '63 (built in late '62) and a '64 4000 . The '63 has an OEM C0NN and the '64 has an OEM C3NN.

The 312259 transmission itself only pins the year of an ag tractor from '59 - late '62.

I was able to use the engine casting number to help me in this regard. It showed an engine that was cast in 1958 & '59. Since my tractor was a SOS which wasn't available in '58, it was most likely that my tractor was a '59 model. My 'blue' transmission wasn't stamped like it was supposed to have been and I've found the same problem on several gas 901s.

Was one date on the block and the other on the head, or were both numbers on the block?

I took the number off the block

The reason that I asked is that any piece that is cast is is only cast once, so how could it have been cast twice in 2 different years? Is one perhaps a casting date and the other an assembly date?

I could be wrong here, but I believe they used that casting two different years from what several people have told me on this site

OK, I think I understand what you were trying to say. Yes, the casting design number (C0NN6015S, or whatever) could be used for multiple years, but the specific engine block in your tractor was only cast once, and it should also have a date code that is cast into that specific block in your tractor that will tell you the exact date that it was cast. I thought that was what you were referring to when you said it was cast in the two different years, that there were two different casting date codes.

Sorry I confused you, you're right, my block was cast in '59.

No problem at all. My brain has always been one that tries to interpret things literally and that has caused misunderstanding/confusion quite a number of times. I troubleshoot computer problems as my job, and I am always having to ask clarifying questions just to make sure that my understanding of the problem is what the customer understands that they are describing to me. It's even worse now that I work from home and do all of my troubleshooting via question and answer and depend on the customers descriptions of the symptoms. Back when I would go on site to the customers offices I could see things for myself and it was much easier to figure out what was going on.
